  • Most people need to lodge a tax return each year, but there are some exceptions. If you had tax taken from any payment you received, whether it is wages or a Centrelink payment, you almost certainly need to lodge a tax return.

    You need to lodge a tax return unless you fall within certain exceptions. The ATO’s 'Do I need to lodge a tax return?' tool will help you work out whether or not you need to lodge.

    If you need to lodge a tax return but don't lodge it, you may have to pay a penalty.
